Mural of Mara

Introduction to three gifts of Mara.

Introduction to three gifts, Mural of Mara, Entry, Queue, Indiana Jones™ Adventure - The Temple of the Forbidden Eye, Adventureland, Disneyland®, Anaheim, California, 2007.07.12 13:24

This is written about the Mural in Indy's Notebook.

Beware the eye of Mara.
The Mural of Mara.
Item #14-B.
Painted with egg and natural pigments on wet plaster - has held up remarkably well. Mara The benevolent god Mara stands with closed eyes as a warning do not look into his eyes!!

The three gifts of Mara can be seen represented as a jug, a bowl and an amulet. The jug with flowing water represents the fountain of eternal youth. The bowl of jewels represents the chamber of earthly riches. The amulet represents the amulet of future knowledge depicting, for the purpose of the mural, the observatory of the future. These motifs are represented throughout the temple, but are particularly poignant here, for it is believed that the servants of Mara would ask the pilgrims as they entered which gift would they choose while indicating this mural before being fitted with blindfolds. The three gifts are also represented as petroglyphs in the stone floor here as well as the painted words ringing the entry "Look not into the eye of Mara and you shall receive the gift of eternal youth, earthly riches or future knowledge."
It is disputed among scholars how much of the route of pilgrims' descent into the sacrum was kept secret by coverting their eyes. Some believe it began here and continued to the chosen chambers where the blinding devices were temporarily removed, then replaced for the return walk. Others are convinced that blindfolds/sacks weren't applied until the bat cave. While others think they were removed at various points along the way, as indicated by early parchment scrolls. It is clear, however, that the practice evolved, and clearly changed whether due to convenience and perhaps later due to laziness of the servants of Mara.
